Actually, your “preference” IS racist

“I don’t date [insert race/ethnicity] guys”

“I only date [insert race/ethnicity] women”

“Oh, you’re attractive for a [insert race/ethnicity] person”

Yes, these comments are racist. If you can’t understand why (I’m sure this will ruffle someone’s feathers) then I suggest that you check your privilege.

Whether you want to believe it or not, this is still discrimination against someone for nothing other than the color of their skin. That is racism.

No it’s not the same as being a straight man who only dates women so don’t even try to make the comparison.

Fetishizing a group of people for their race is not okay. It’s gross. Your “Asian fever” isn’t cute. Black women are more than curves and attitude. And you can’t claim that you”love”a group of people and then turn around and perpetuate stereotypes about them. Or stay silent when their community is hit with a tragedy.

If you’re the kind of person that has said one of the statements above, you obviously have the choice to continue to do so. But don’t try to dismiss it as “just a preference” when it’s actually much more than that.

  1. This is a fascinating topic. Especially if you juxtapose onto it the idea that people tend to marry people who are like them. I remember reading a survey in El Pais about 15 years ago which said something like 70% of Spaniards would not marry someone from another country. That’s probably changed since then, but it shows how conditioned people can be to in-group loyalty (consciously and subconsciously.)
