Why do people lie?

Yet again we have an example of Paul Williams of Blogging Theology repeating a lie, thus demonstrating his contempt for his own beliefs. He conflates atheism with communism to suggest that atheism is responsible for more death than any other ideology, conveniently ignores Hitler’s religious roots, and also ignores all the death and violence in the name of organised religion, both throughout history and on-going.

It’s ironic that he would quite rightly condemn any attempt to equate Islam with ISIS, and then fall prey to the sweeping, misleading generalisations like the one above. Clearly, Paul struggles to practice what he preaches.

I shall remind him of quotes from the Quran that he apparently feels can be ignored…

And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].” [Quran 2:42]

In their hearts is disease, so Allah has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie.”[Quran 2:10]

Allah knows that you are His Messenger, and Allah testifies that the hypocrites are liars.” [Quran 63: 1]

  1. I told him that Hitler was a Catholic, and that every Nazi belt-buckle had Gott Mitt Uns (God is with us) inscribed on it.
I got back that, he was born in mostly-Catholic Austria, but gave up his religion early in life, and the inscription was only to placate the German populace. 🙄
