Against the background of the trial of Derek Chauvin (the former cop who knelt on George Floyd’s neck until Floyd died) comes a fresh tragedy, yet another shooting of a black person by a cop, in a scenario where you have to seriously question the mentality of US cops, their training, and why they are especially trigger-happy when black people are involved. Daunte Wright did not deserve to die, whatever crimes he was alleged to have committed. His killer, a now ex-cop, claims to have mistake their gun for their taser, despite years of experience.
We will hear the usual excuses from the usual quarters. None of them will matter. This situation can be distilled to one word – racism. It’s an ugly truth, a bitter reality, and until it is properly opposed, what happened to Daunte Wright will happen to others.
