It’s no secret that I have concerns over the effort of organised religion to exert an influence over the lives of everyone else. This is the mindset that’s all-too-typical of the religious, conservative right. They operate out of a belief that people must conform to the whim of a specific religious belief.
This is the case across many different avenues of life, and it’s not without irony that some of the biggest complainers of the ‘selfishness’ of ‘unbelievers’ are the ones of the religious right, who want nothing more than to force their beliefs upon everyone else. Sometimes they end up in positions to try, despite (in some parts of the world at least) their efforts actually falling foul of the law. Take one Gene McGee, the mayor of Ridgeland, Mississippi. McGee holds deep Christian convictions and he used these convictions to withhold vital funding from the Madison County Library System. He would only release the funds if they agreed to remove LGBT+ material from their resources.
As McGee is a public servant and charged with being responsible for all the people living under his jurisdiction (not just Christians or the religious right) it is clear he is failing to meet his duty.
From the link:
Tonja Johnson, executive director for the Madison County Library System, told the Mississippi Free Press in an afternoon interview that she first reached out to Mayor McGee after failing to receive the City of Ridgeland’s first quarterly payment of 2022.
Johnson said the mayor informed her that no payment was forthcoming. “He explained his opposition to what he called ‘homosexual materials’ in the library, that it went against his Christian beliefs, and that he would not release the money as the long as the materials were there,” the library director said.
The director then explained to the mayor that the library system, as a public entity, was not a religious institution. “I explained that we are a public library and we serve the entire community. I told him our collection reflects the diversity of our community,” Johnson said.

As Ms Johnson made clear, the library is there to serve the needs of the entire community, not merely one specific corner of it. McGee’s response was typical of fundamentalists:
Apparently, the mayor was unmoved. “He told me that the library can serve whoever we wanted, but that he only serves the great Lord above,” she finished.

Again, I’ll remark on the irony of the religious ‘sparring partners’ I’ve had lamenting about the selfishness of non-believers, when we have a public official abusing his position to force everyone else to abide by his private religious beliefs. Fortunately he was opposed, by more than one community, who rallied around the call of Soatok. Hence why I refer to this as a ‘feel-good’ story, unlike a lot of posts. The drive to defy the mayor’s illegal withholding of funds ended with citizens not just from the local area and not just from the USA raising enough cash to make up the shortfall of money.
It should not be down to such fund-raising, but it’s an indication that when religious fundamentalists try to bully other communities, those communities are capable of fighting back and defying them. I think we can all take a bit of inspiration from that.

I absolutely agree that it’s heartwarming to see people coming forth with donations to keep the library afloat. That said, this Mayor McGee is guilty of a number of things: violating the Constitutional separation of church and state; failing to fulfill his duty; confiscation of public funding … and I’m sure there is more. He needs to be ousted and quickly before the disease he has spreads! As a non-believer, I respect everyone’s right to their own religious or non-religious beliefs, but government must not choose a single religion to shove down our throats as McGee has attempted to do! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

The idiot MGTOW who tries to act like the big bad bully piped up at this post.
Eh yeah I can agree religion over reach is bad , Id simply say move all LGBTQ Books to a adults section or require adult aproval of any minor checking out said books . Kids in grade School do not need LGBTQ stuff shoved down their throats either , Yall cry over a religious person shoving their religion on other but your cult of progressivism feminism and LGBTQ can be forced on all of us and yall think that is a good thing. Peacful divorce of the Politcal sectors of Amerca is a good idea . Blue states yall can be gay trans commies, the rest of sane America can have free market capitalism own guns and hold secrure elections . You all get what you want ie comand econmy and starving . We can have liberty and capitalistic prosperity. Peacful seperation would be good for us and when you commies starve you can beg to rejoin America .
I’m not surprised that he thinks the mere existence of LGBT material means it’s being forced on others. No one is forcing him to go to a library and read it. No one is forcing him to read feminist materials. As for the rest, it’s hard to decipher through the terrible spelling and sentence structure, but in the end it’s bullshit I’ve refuted before. As before, he is too cowardly to deal with the answers.

He’s never struck me as particularly stable, and his latest incoherent rant is further proof of that.

This dude with the 4th grade education who cannot even spell is certifiable!!! I’ve blocked his comments on my blog for he doesn’t even have the decency to be respectful. He rants against school children being exposed to LGBTQ material, but many school children NEED to read it, need to know that they are not alone, are not ‘strange’!!! It’s good that this MGTOW is a confirmed bachelor so hopefully he won’t reproduce … I cannot imagine any woman who would have him!

Studying to become an Librarian and working in Libraries. Libraries already have systems in place so minors are not taking adult reading. So the whole LGBTQIA is only full of adult reading, is BS.

I had the same thought! He’s basically applying a sexual concept to it, motivated by his own fantasies (‘lesbian porn, hur hur’), and thus assumes all LGBT+ material is sexual in nature, which you know is utterly false.
It’s slightly different for it concerns a TV show, but there’s a cartoon on Disney+ called The Owl House. I’d say it’s aimed at the 10+ age bracket, it’s quite funny (and weird), and the main protagonist (a girl) develops a crush on another girl. At no point is anything sexual implied, instead we have a gentle love story that applies to anyone of that age who is trying to overcome shyness and talk to their crush. My MGTOW pet would cry blue murder over this.

It’s just all so annoying and unnecessary.
